Maintaining adequate parental supervision becomes a central concern when working parents leave young children unattended during the day. As children grow older, interest in popular pastimes—such as video games—can lead to covert behaviour if boundaries are not clearly defined. Discovering that children have been sneaking out of the home or resorting to dishonesty creates significant distress for parents, but the situation demands a structured, measured response. In Islamic tradition, children represent a sacred trust (Amanah) placed in the care of parents. Guardians are required to oversee the moral and physical well-being of their offspring with wisdom and consistency. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) affirmed this responsibility, stating:

“All of you are guardians and all of you are responsible for your wards” (Sahih al-Bukhari).

Protecting children from harm requires establishing clear house rules, addressing deceit firmly, and maintaining appropriate supervisory arrangements.

Addressing Dishonesty

When an elder sibling is assigned responsibility for younger brothers and sisters, expectations regarding domestic oversight must be explicitly defined. A private conversation with the eldest child should outline the gravity of trust, emphasising that monitoring safety, homework, and routine care requires complete integrity. Leaving the home without permission or leading younger siblings into dishonest habits directly violates that trust. Concurrently, parents must address the habit of lying collectively with all children. Dishonesty undermines family cohesion, and failing to correct it early encourages siblings to shield one another’s misconduct through mutual deception. Islam stresses absolute honesty as a foundation for moral character. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated:

“Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise… Falsehood leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire” (Sahih al-Bukhari).

Establishing clear, predictable consequences for dishonesty deters future deceit and reinforces the value of truthfulness within the household.

Constructive Outlets and Scheduled Recreation

Addressing childhood desires for popular media requires practical accommodation rather than total prohibition, provided the content remains morally acceptable. If the video games in question contain no violent or inappropriate elements, parents can establish a predictable schedule to accompany their children to recreational venues during holidays or free time. Providing structured opportunities for recreation eliminates the impulse for children to sneak out, as they know their desire for entertainment will be met through legitimate channels. Balancing firm boundaries with reasonable recreational access helps children feel understood while upholding parental authority.

Adult Supervision

Relying exclusively on an adolescent child to supervise younger siblings for extended periods during work hours introduces structural vulnerability to the household. An adolescent undergoing personal development and emotional growth possesses limited capacity to manage multiple younger siblings consistently. Working parents should strongly consider engaging an adult caregiver, such as a trusted relative or a qualified childminder, to oversee the home during working hours. Investing in adult supervision ensures that an experienced individual remains accountable for domestic safety, allowing adolescent children to focus on their own educational and developmental needs without bearing excessive adult responsibilities.
