Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states: “It is a husband’s duty to provide shelter for his divorcee. Her leaving home in this case, as far as I could see, is because of her emotional trauma rather than due to a wilful neglect of spousal duty on her part. So, you should provide for her reasonable support and maintenance during the `iddah and alimony (mut`ah) after the `iddah if you decide not to revoke the divorce. As for the amount of alimony, it is decided in accordance with the standards of the society both of you are living.”
