Leaving a sin for Allah, such as an inappropriate online attachment, can be one of the most emotionally challenging experiences a believer faces in the modern digital age. It is common for individuals to engage in seemingly innocent online chatting about studies or religion, only to find that frequent communication and joking lead to emotional attachment and fitnah (temptation). When a person realises that such interactions displease the Creator, taking the decisive step to end the contact requires immense spiritual strength. This often results in feelings of profound loneliness and depression, leading a person to question whether pushing away a decent companion was truly necessary.
The Righteousness of Cutting Ties
A believer who severs inappropriate contact with the opposite sex has made the correct decision and should never feel blameworthy for taking steps to protect their faith. Recognising the wrongness of an action and turning away from it demonstrates sincere piety and a deep consciousness of the Almighty. Indeed, Allah loves those who return to Him in repentance and abandon the transgressions they once committed.
Divine Compensation for Sacrifices
The sorrow experienced after ending an attachment is a known hardship, but it carries an immense promise of divine reward. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) assured believers that whenever a person abandons a matter solely out of reverence for the Creator, they will be granted something superior in return. He stated,
“Verily, you will never leave anything for the sake of Allah Almighty but that Allah will replace it with something better for you” (Musnad Ahmad).
Understanding the Struggle and Whisperings of Satan
Experiencing sadness or depression after breaking off such an attachment is entirely normal. Sins and borderline interactions are notoriously difficult to quit, particularly when they have become an ingrained part of a person’s daily routine and hold personal appeal. Furthermore, whenever a person is left with idle time, Satan exploits the opportunity to manipulate their inner thoughts, casting doubt and amplifying feelings of loneliness.
Practical Steps to Overcome Depression
To combat these negative thoughts and heal from the emotional void, scholars advise filling one’s time with constructive acts of obedience. A person navigating this difficulty should implement the following steps:
- Sincere Supplication: Pray earnestly to Allah for assistance in overcoming the evils and weaknesses of the soul.
- Trust in Divine Wisdom: Maintain full trust in Allah’s unfathomable wisdom, believing firmly that He intended good by guiding the heart to discover the error and granting the strength to repent.
- Seek a Righteous Spouse: Ask the Almighty to grant a pious spouse with whom to build a lawful family dedicated to serving Allah and His religion.
- Increase Acts of Worship: Make beneficial use of free time through various acts of devotion, such as establishing regular salah (prayer), reading and memorising the Quran, and engaging in dhikr (remembrance of Allah).
- Righteous Companionship: Actively seek the company of righteous peers and cooperate with them in voluntary and charitable endeavours, which helps to redirect focus and build a supportive environment.
