Engaging in media employment within major television networks requires a careful evaluation of the specific content an individual is responsible for promoting and scheduling. As modern broadcasting encompasses a vast array of entertainment, including international films, serials, and commercial advertisements, Muslim professionals must ensure that their daily duties align with Islamic ethical standards regarding a permissible livelihood.
The Nature of Promoted Content
The permissibility of working in television presentation and scheduling depends entirely on the nature of the material an individual directly handles. If a worker is tasked with organising, scheduling, or creating promotional content that explicitly features prohibited elements, the role becomes legally impermissible. Prohibited elements include scenes depicting physical immodesty, the exposure of parts of the body that must remain covered, or advertisements that directly invite viewers to consume alcohol and engage in vice.
Conversely, if the direct responsibilities of an individual are limited to textual scheduling and neutral language that contains nothing forbidden, while the visual elements and specific images are prepared entirely by other departments, the employment is considered permissible.
Scriptural Principles on Earnings and Cooperation
Islamic jurisprudence establishes that assistance in any action dictates the spiritual status of that work. Believers are commanded to ensure that their professional contributions do not aid in the dissemination of harm or vice. The Quran explicitly outlines the boundaries of mutual assistance:
“And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.” — Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:2
Furthermore, ensuring the absolute purity of one’s income is a core duty for every Muslim. In a narration transmitted by Bukhari, the Prophet Muhammad emphasised the importance of maintaining clarity in financial matters:
“The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters about which many people do not know. Thus he who avoids doubtful matters clears himself in regard to his religion and his honour.” — Bukhari
Evaluating Income Based on Job Duties
The lawfulness of a person’s salary is directly tethered to the lawfulness of their specific actions within an enterprise. When the core duties performed by an employee are free from forbidden elements, the resulting income is entirely lawful.
However, if an individual’s primary output actively promotes or schedules material that contradicts Islamic law, the earnings derived from those specific tasks become doubtful or impermissible. Workers in the broadcasting sector must routinely audit their specific daily tasks to ensure their livelihood remains entirely wholesome and free from spiritual compromise.
