It should be noted that the world of jinn is a world of the unseen. We do not know anything about it except that which Allah has told us in His Book or on the lips of His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
Based on this, we cannot say anything about them except that which has been narrated in the texts of Islam. However, it should be noted that Allah has given us information about the jinn and other creatures for our benefit. Hence we should not concern ourselves with matters that have been kept hidden from us or look into the mysteries of the jinn which can only be known through revelation.
Regarding the issue of perfume, it is true that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used it and recommended it for his nation. Thus, what might be heard about the perfumed person’s being dominated by jinn is a sheer superstition. On the contrary, as the jinn are known to prefer impurities, filth and unpleasant smells, perfumes are not liked by jinn.
As for the dwellings of the jinn, they often gather in ruins and unclean places like toilets and garbage dumps. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “These toilets are haunted (inhabited by devils), so when anyone of you goes to the toilet let him say, ‘A’oodhu Billaahi min al-khubthi wa’l-khaba’ith (I seek refuge with Allah from the male and female devils).” Narrated by Abu Dawud, classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Silsilat al-Ahaadeeth al-Saheehah.
Furthermore, relieving oneself under the trees that people use for sitting in their shades is also forbidden, not because they are the houses of jinn but because this will cause people to curse those who have soiled their sitting places.
