What we know for sure is that the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) accepted gifts from non-Muslims in many a case. We also know that he permitted Asma’ the daughter of Abu Bakr to give gifts to her non-Muslim mother. Therefore, it is permissible to exchange gifts with non-Muslims provided that the gifts be lawful items that are not prohibited in Islam
