The prominent Muslim scholar, Sheikh Muhammad Iqbal Nadvi, Director and Imam of Al-Falah Islamic Center, Oakville, Ontario, Canada, states: “Some people misunderstand the hadith, “the one who performs hajj correctly he will come back as free from sins as he was the day he was born.” However, this does not mean that the conditions stipulated for accepting Tawbah are waived after performing hajj; the stipulations of sincere Tawbah must be fulfilled.
In other words, Hajj is not a sanction for re-starting one’s sins. According to the Prophetic hadith, “The sign of accepted hajj is that the person, after performing hajj, becomes more reluctant to worldly temptations and more interested in doing things of great reward in the hereafter.””
