The belief in horoscopes and astrology is a widespread phenomenon in modern society, often causing unnecessary anxiety about the unseen future. Individuals may encounter highly specific astrological predictions regarding major life events—such as the exact age they will marry or the precise timing of a spouse’s passing—which can deeply disturb the mind, even if a person claims not to believe in them. Understanding the Islamic perspective on such predictions is essential for safeguarding one’s faith and maintaining spiritual tranquility.

The Prohibition of Astrological Predictions

It is not fitting for a Muslim to be disturbed by or pay attention to such superstitions. Engaging with these baseless thoughts can subtly lead a person toward prohibited (haram) practices and beliefs. Prominent scholars state unequivocally that it is strictly forbidden in Islam to believe in horoscopes or to attribute anything that happens in life to astrological signs.

Life events, including marriage, provision, or the death of a loved one, are not dependent in any way on the alignment of stars or a horoscope; everything occurs solely according to the divine will of the Almighty. To counter these disturbing thoughts, a Muslim is advised to free their mind from such superstitions, seek Allah’s forgiveness, and engage frequently in remembrance (dhikr) and supplication (dua) to remain steadfast on the right path.

Reliance on Divine Decree (Qadar)

A core tenet of the Islamic faith is the belief in divine destiny (qadar). A believer must strengthen their conviction that horoscopes possess absolutely no power to dictate or influence the future, whether for good or bad. Only the Almighty possesses knowledge of the unseen and what the future holds. A Muslim should submit entirely to the divine decree, focusing instead on performing good deeds and avoiding evil, rather than wasting valuable time investigating what a horoscope might falsely claim.

Prophetic Guidance on Trusting Allah

The foundation of this absolute reliance is beautifully captured in the Prophetic guidance. A Muslim must firmly believe that all affairs are predestined and no creation knows what is written for them. As recorded in Sunan at-Tirmidhi (Hadith 2516), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) imparted profound advice to his young companion, Ibn ‘Abbas, stating:

“Be mindful of Allah, Allah will protect you; be mindful of Allah and you will always find Him there for you. When you seek assistance, seek it from Him; you must know that nothing will happen to you except what fate has decreed. If all mankind gather to give a benefit or interest which was not destined for you, you will not get it. If they gather to deprive you from something good which is destined for you, you will get it.”

Therefore, true peace of mind is found not in seeking answers from the stars, but in submitting wholeheartedly to the Creator of those stars.
