Muhammad Al-Mukhtar al-Shinqiti, Director of the Islamic Center of South Plains, Lubbock, Texas, states the following: In Islam it is permissible for the woman to seek divorce in case of abandonment, but the scholars held different views as to determining the period of abandonment after which the wife can claim her right of divorce. Many scholars tend to limit the period of abandonment for 6 months unless there is valid reason to warrant an extension. According to the American law, a wife is given the right to seek divorce after 6 months of the husband abandonment.
