Dr. Monzer Kahf, a prominent economist and counselor states: “if the quantity of gold in jewelry is of the amount of approximately 85 grams, the jewelry is then subject to Zakah according to the Hanafi school. I go as long with the Qaradawi reconciliation that if jewelry is used normally and its value is not beyond what peers have, it is then not subject to Zakah. If any of these two conditions is not satisfied the jewelry is not subject to Zakah. According to this opinion when Zakah is obligatory the amount that is subject to Zakah is the market value of the jewelry as it is on the day when Zakah is due.
