Qasidah Burdah is a poem that praises the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). There are many other poems composed for the same purpose and this one is no exception. Some people may refer it and feel impressed by its skillful composition while others may prefer other poems. There is certainly no evidence for its being more excellent or its being a source of relief or benefit.
On the contrary, some people of knowledge attacked certain verses in this poem for the exaggerated praise they contain. Some of these verses, for example, ascribe to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) some divine attributes such as the knowledge of the Unseen and the knowledge of al-lawh al-Mahfuz (the Heavenly Preserved Writ). In some other verses, they remarked, the poet seeks help from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and seeks refuge in him. Allah alone is the one whose help and refuge are sought.
