Understanding and Caring for a Child with ADHD – Islamically, there should be no distinction in how we treat our own children and those placed in our care, whether they are stepchildren, adopted, or foster children. We must always remember that we are accountable to Allah for how we care for them. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) set the best examples of kindness and care towards children under his guardianship.

Step-parenting and caring for stepchildren can be challenging, especially when raising a child with special needs like ADHD. It is essential to handle all children, whether biological or not, with the same level of care and responsibility. Children, in general, are a trust from Allah, and we must dedicate our actions and intentions to His sake, ensuring we raise them in the best possible manner. This perspective makes dealing with challenges easier, knowing we are ultimately accountable to Allah.

Regarding children with ADHD:

If a child in your care has ADHD and is on medication, it is wise to have them regularly checked to ensure they are not experiencing adverse effects such as restlessness, anxiety, mood swings, headaches, reduced appetite, insomnia, or growth problems. Some doctors even recommend occasional breaks from medication to reassess the child’s needs.

Foods to be cautious of include:

  • Sugar
  • Cow’s milk
  • Wheat
  • Chocolate
  • Soy
  • Citrus fruits
  • Corn
  • Peanuts

What you can do:

  • Read ingredient labels on all food products.
  • Buy organic fruits, vegetables, and meats.
  • Add more whole foods to the diet, such as whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and fish.
  • Replace processed sugars with natural sugars like fruits, fruit juices, honey, and blackstrap molasses.

In Islamic parenting, there should be a balanced approach to discipline and care. Even our own children require us to act with care and compassion, ensuring our actions align with Islamic principles. Positive discipline, guided by love and care, helps in raising well-adjusted children. Raising children is a challenge, but when done for Allah’s sake, He guides and protects us and our children.

May Allah guide us all and protect our children..
