If a pregnant woman's embryo is diagnosed with Down Syndrome and she is 12 weeks pregnant, is abortion in this case permissible to avoid tormenting both the child and it's family?

I have heard people say that women at the time of the Prophet did not seem to be afflicted with the same degree of difficulty with Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) or menopause, because of perhaps their God-consciousness. Is this true? Is there any mention of menopause or PMS in the sources of Islam?
