showing off

As-salamu `alaykum. Some people abandon good deeds, for example going to the mosque early or performing the Sunnah prayers, because they fear that this may lead them to showing off (riya’). Could you tell me whether this is a valid reason for abstaining from good deeds or not? Thank you.
