Respected scholars, as-salamu `alaykum. I write poetry and it may be published, but I need to know if it is OK to write poetry that it is not Islamic. Like for example love poems and friendship poems. I have been told many different things, and I thought it is best to ask somebody who has more experience. Jazakum Allahu khayran.

Respected scholars, as-Salamu `alaykum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh! Just recently we had a discussion about poetry in Islam. The search in Imam Al-Bukhari's collection of Hadith revealed that a Sahabi (Prophet's Companion) `Amir Al-Akwa` on the way to Khaybar recited poetry to the Muslims and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praised him. Then there are another hadith, which projects a negative attitude towards poetry. We would like to seek your explanation on this subject. Jazakum Allah khayran.

We read that some poets quote from the Qur’an in their poems. Is this lawful from the point of view of Islam or not?
