Divorcing wife to obtain nationality
As-Salamu `alaykum. I am a Muslim living in France, and I am married to an Arab. I deputized my father to divorce my wife on my behalf in front of an Arab court. However, I do not have the intention of divorcing her. I just want to do that to be able to get the needed official papers that prove that I am single. By proving so, I would be able to marry a French woman here to acquire the nationality because the law in France does not approve of having more than one wife. The problem is that I do not want to leave my wife, so what is the Islamic ruling for such a divorce?
