Islam and Nationalism: Are They Compatible?
As-salamu `alaykum. First of all, I would like thank all the brothers and sisters behind IslamOnline who provide this wonderful service. My question is regarding nationalism and whether it is compatible with Islam. My personal view is that Allah created one world for all of humanity and He never divided them into nations or territorial regions. Nationalism and patriotism are practices of jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance) that run against the fabric of unity and brotherhood that Islam stands for. I believe that there can be only two nations: one in which its people have accepted Islam and are under Islamic rule or a caliphate, the other nation consists of people who refuse to do so. I would like to have the view of scholars on this subject.
