What are the sacred months? And why are they held in high esteem?

Is Hajj Acceptable in Months Other Than Dhul-Hijjah?

Dear scholars, as-salamu `alaykum. As far as I understand from the exegesis of the Qur'an, it is possible to do the pilgrimage in four months, specifically Shawwal, Dhul-Qi`dah, and Dhul-Hijjah. Is it possible to perform Hajj in any of the four months instead of Dhul-Hijjah? Jazakum Allahu khayran.
