Miqat of Hajj

I live in Jeddah. I intended to perform `Umrah and so I entered ihram while I was still at home. I went to the Sacred Precinct of Makkah, but, out of my hand, I could not perform the `Umrah; I did not even start circumambulating the Ka`bah. I went back to Jeddah late during that night. What is the legal ruling concerning this? Is there any expiation required from me?

In sha’ Allah, my husband and I are going to perform Hajj this year. I will be having my monthly period when we leave theUnited States. My question is: Should I enter the state of ihram at the miqat (appointed place to wear ihram) in the plane and do all the rites of `Umrah except the Tawaf and when I make ghusl (ritual cleansing of the body), then do the Tawaf? Or would it be better if I do not assume ihram in the plane and then go back to the miqat and enter the state of ihram for `Umrah after I have performed ghusl? If the first option is better, will I be in the state of ihram for the rest of my period until I make ghusl and then the Tawaf? Also, am I allowed to recite the Qur’an while I am menstruating?
