Disposing of Embryos After Using IVF
If you are having infertility problems and can't conceieve naturally my understanding is that Islamic rule says you can use the medical technology Allah has given us. However, how do you justify the fact that in using IVF you may dispose of a number of embryos. So you may choose only to implant 3 as opposed to the 10 created. If the rest are 'disposed' is this not akin to murder? An embryo is a potential human life? And, what of where Pre implantation genetic diagnosis techniques allow us to test these embryos for diseases, so you have a history of serious genetic disease and you are having IVF, is it legitimate to choose the embryos which you will implant on the basis of those which do not have those genes? Is this permissible, what islamic basis would there be for this considering disabled people and disease can be given by Allah (swt) and sometimes great reward comes from caring for these people. Does this mean we should not select against them and blindly choose any 3 of 6 embryos thus ignoring what medical technology has given us? Should we take up everything science offers us? for allah provided us with the ability to develop science?Inshallah the answer will be extremely useful for a government paper and ethical paper of Pre implantation genetic diagnosis I am writing. I feel the Islamic perspective always explains the right path and wish to add the Islamic view in my paper.
