I'tikaf

Dear scholars. As-Salamu `alaykum. What is the significance of i`tikaf in Islam? Why should Muslims retreat in the mosque for ten days? Doesn’t this ritual have bad effects on production in Muslim lands? Jazakum Allah khayran.
