Assalamu alaikum.Is it permissable for a Muslim to become a genetic counsellor? Where you are advising parents the risk of their unborn child of developing a serious genetic disorder,they can on the basis of the information provided can choose to have an abortion. Even though a genetic counsellor does not tell them what to do they do provide the pros and cons. I am seriously thinking about this as a career choice (given that some Muslim communities are at higher risk of inheriting a disorder). However, i have doubts as to whether it is compatible with Islamic principles, especially if a patient decides to abort an embryo.Please let me know soon. JazakAllah Khair

The popular view is that this information would simply revolutionize the understanding and treatment of diseases. With the breakthrough in human genome research, the genetic make-up of all people could very realistically be available to other people. Hence, what is the way to prevent this, and what is the Islamic advice on this concern?Jazakum Allah khayran.
