gatherings

As-salamu `alaykum. Jazakum Allah khayran for the service you are providing to Muslims world wide. My question is, in Islamic gatherings such as weddings or Islamic lectures, can males and females attend such gatherings together? What are the Islamic guidelines that govern such gatherings?
