Using Pig Enzyme in Fertilizers
As-Salamu `alaykum. Dear respectable scholars: My question is regarding the use of an enzyme that is produced from pigs. The enzyme is used in a composting process of turning food wastes into organic fertilizer. I want to know whether it is permissible for Muslims to use this type of composting system or not.I think that such fertilizer must not be used for the purpose of growing vegetables or fruits that can be consumed by Muslims. However, it is permissible to use it for the purpose of growing other kinds of plants such as landscaping and garden greens, not for eating at all. Also, can we encourage Muslim community to use the composting system since Islam forbids us to waste foods, while composting can turn them into useful resources, not mere garbage?
