I belong to a Sufi group in Pakistan. We have been told not to wear red and green as these are holy colors and should be respected. We are told not to buy anything in these colors too. Does this have any basis in Islam?

Dear scholars, As-Salamu `alaykum. When I was younger, I was told that wearing a tie is haram (unlawful) because it represents a cross. I would like to know if this is true or not? This question is very important because I have been told at work that I must wear a tie or I will be fired. The other Muslim brothers working in my company do wear ties, so the company is using this against me saying "if they are wearing ties why can't you?" Jazakum Allah khayran.
