Providing Sadaqah for Parents during times of economic hardship is a profound act of devotion, even if they are not entirely destitute. When an adult child assists a mother or father in maintaining their standard of living amidst financial crises, this support is highly commendable and carries immense blessings.
The Ruling on Parental Support
Prominent scholars state that whether this assistance is categorised as a gift or voluntary charity, the spiritual reward remains assured. The Quran explicitly prioritises family in financial care:
“They ask you, [O Muhammad], what they should spend. Say, ‘Whatever you spend of good is [to be] for parents and relatives and orphans and the needy and the traveler. And whatever you do of good – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.'” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:215).
Zakah and Broader Charity
However, it is a strict legal ruling that such familial maintenance cannot be counted towards a person’s obligatory Zakah. Furthermore, while supporting family is paramount, a Muslim should not restrict charitable deeds solely to one individual; generosity should be extended to others in the community whenever financial means permit.
