The Companions of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) occupy the highest status among the Muslim Ummah. They have confidently supported the Prophet and have offered up their souls, children, properties, and everything for the sake of Allah and in service of Islam. Their history asserts that they were a matchless and unique group of people. Their role in spreading Islam and practicing it confirms that they have gone so far and none could catch up with them.
Answering your question, the late Sheikh Ibn Al-`Uthaymeen, a prominent Muslim scholar (may Allah have mercy on his soul), stated,
Reaching the level of the Companions is not possible, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
“The best of the people are my generation and then those who come after them and then those who come after them.”(Al-Bukhari)
Yet, rectifying [the affairs of] the Muslim Ummah to make its current state better is surely possible. Indeed, Allah is All-Powerful over everything. It was authentically reported on the authority of Thawban that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
“A group of my Ummah will continue to prevail, adhering to the truth, and they will not be harmed by those who abandon them and oppose them, until the decree of Allah comes to pass while they are like that.” (Al-Bukhari, Muslim, and At-Tirmidhi)
Undoubtedly, the current state of the Muslim Ummah is worthy of censure, far removed from that Allah requires from it, especially for its gathering together upon the religion of Allah, and adhering strongly to the religion of Allah. Almighty Allah says,
(And lo! This, your religion, is one religion, and I am your Lord, so keep your duty unto Me.)(Al-Mu’minun 23:52)
