The obligation of Hijab is a fundamental aspect of a Muslim woman’s faith and identity. However, Islam is a religion of ease and mercy, designed to accommodate genuine hardships. A common and painful predicament arises when a sister suffers from chronic scalp conditions, such as scalp folliculitis, where the heat and friction of the headscarf exacerbate inflammation and infection.
In such cases, the Shari’ah provides specific concessions based on the principle of necessity (Darurah).
The General Ruling: Necessity Permits the Prohibited
Scholars affirm that if a medical condition becomes unbearable and a qualified physician advises that relief can only be obtained by temporarily removing the Hijab, the sister falls into the category of those who are excused.
They draw a parallel to the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who allowed certain male Companions to wear silk—which is strictly forbidden for men—because they suffered from severe skin conditions (scabies/itching). Just as the prohibition of silk was lifted for medical necessity, the obligation of covering may be temporarily relaxed if it causes harm.
Conditions for the Concession
However, this permission is not an open door to abandon the Hijab permanently or based on mere discomfort. It is a specific exception bound by strict conditions:
- Genuine Medical Need: The decision must be based on the advice of a trustworthy medical professional, not merely personal preference.
- Temporary Nature: The concession is valid only as long as the condition persists. Once the scalp heals or the weather changes, the obligation returns.
- Lack of Alternatives: One must exhaust other options before uncovering in public.
Practical Steps Before Uncovering
Scholars advise a graduated approach to ensure one limits the exemption to what is absolutely necessary:
- Seek Leave/Vacation: If possible, take time off work or school to stay home. This allows the scalp to breathe and heal without the need to uncover in front of non-Mahrams (unrelated men).
- Partial Covering: If you must work, try to cover only when necessary. If you have a private office or are in an area with only women, remove the Hijab immediately to air the scalp.
- Fabric Choice: Ensure you are using breathable, natural fabrics (like 100% cotton) and avoid synthetic materials that trap heat.
The Final Verdict
If, after trying these alternatives, the condition remains severe and you must work or go out, you are permitted to uncover your hair to the extent necessary to allow healing. This is done without incurring sin, as Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear.
