Dr. Rif`at Fawzi, former professor of Shari`ah at Cairo Univ. , states: “A Muslim man is not permitted to go swimming while uncovering a part of his `Awrah in front of men or women. The `Awarah of the man is what is between the navel and knees. There is a difference whether the thigh and the belly button are parts of the `Awrah or not. The most correct view is that they are parts of man’s `Awrah that must be covered.”
