Many people must use topical medications for illnesses, such as a medicated polish for a toenail infection that forms a barrier. A common question arises: if this medication prevents water from reaching the skin or nail during wudu (ablution), is the wudu still valid?

The Ruling on Necessity vs. Beautification

According to Islamic scholars, performing wudu while such a medication is on is acceptable. This is considered a case of necessity (darurah).

The ruling is different from that of standard cosmetic nail polish. The prohibition on barriers during wudu typically applies to substances used for beautification. A substance required for valid medical treatment does not fall under this prohibition.

Therefore, in this case of necessity, the ablution is considered valid, and the prayers performed with it are accepted, insha’Allah.
