One of the main objectives of the Shari`ah is to alleviate suffering from the lives of Muslims and to add to their comfort and ease. It is for this reason that there is nothing wrong with undergoing laser surgery to correct eyesight.
The well-known Saudi Islamic lecturer and author Sheikh Muhammad Saleh Al-Munajjid stated the following: Generally speaking, the Shari`ah does not prevent Muslims from doing things that will benefit them and enhance their physical faculties as long as they use permissible means.
Carrying out laser surgery to correct weak vision is permissible. There is nothing wrong with it if it is done by an expert and it is assumed that the surgery will most likely be successful and will not result in harm or complications that will make the situation worse than before. The reason is because Islam forbids Muslims to harm themselves and others, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said, “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm” (Imam Malik).
