Islam does not oppose keeping pets as long as you are not going to do any harm to them. There are some reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not disapprove keeping pets such as cats and birds. We should know that dogs are not pure and cannot be taken as pets by Muslims simply because they are not clean unless there is a cogent reason to keep them such as for protection or for security reasons.

The eminent Muslim scholar and renowned Da`iyah, Sheikh `Abdel Khaliq Hasan Ash-Shareef, states: “Islam does not prevent taking birds as pets as long as it does not cause harm such as falcons or vultures. However, we are recommended not to waste time in such things as some people might spend hours or waste loads of money for buying unnecessary things for pets such as accessories, etc. We are responsible for our money, and we will be asked about how we spent it and what was the source we got it from.
