The relationship between Istikharah and dreams is one of the most common misconceptions among Muslims seeking divine guidance. Many believe that after performing the prayer of consultation (Salat al-Istikharah), they must see a specific dream (like green or white colors) to indicate a “yes,” or a nightmare to indicate a “no.”

This article clarifies the true purpose of Istikharah, how to interpret its results, and whether dreams are a necessary component of the answer.

The Misconception of Dreams

It is not necessary to see a dream in order to know if the Istikharah is positive or negative. While Allah can guide a person through a dream, it is not the standard or primary method of response. Relying solely on confusing dream fragments—like receiving gifts, feeling sad then happy, or seeing a mosque—can often lead to more confusion rather than clarity.

The True Signs: Tranquility and Ease

The bottom line with Istikharah is not a visual sign, but an internal state and external reality.

  1. Tranquility (Inshirah as-Sadr): The primary sign is the feeling of comfort, satisfaction, and tranquility a person finds in their heart regarding a specific decision after the prayer.
  2. Facilitation (Taysir): If the matter is good for you, Allah will make the path easy. Obstacles will be removed, and events will flow naturally toward that outcome. If it is bad for you, Allah will create obstacles or turn your heart away from it.

Repeating Istikharah

If a person cannot determine their feelings or remains confused, they are allowed—and encouraged—to repeat the Istikharah. There is no limit to how many times one can ask Allah for guidance.

One of the great Caliphs, `Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), once faced a difficult decision. After consulting with the Companions, he continued to make Istikharah for a whole month until Allah guided him to the right decision and his heart felt settled.

Practical Advice for Marriage

Therefore, the objective is to reach a state of satisfaction and certainty. In the case of marriage, one should not be in a rush.

  • Consult (Istisharah): Before or along with Istikharah, one must check the background, character, and compatibility of the prospective spouse.
  • Pray: Continue to pray Istikharah until the heart feels inclined toward one direction and the practical steps become easy or blocked.
