First of all, we would like to say that there is nothing wrong, as far as Islam is concerned, in giving one’s zakah money to a needy immediate family member as long as they’re financially straitened and cannot provide for their needs. However, if one is rich enough to provide for their needs in ways other than giving one’s zakah, then one should do so.
Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states: We are allowed to give our zakah to a needy family member who has needs like children and such if they are poor and, therefore, unable to provide for themselves and them.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Charity to one’s own blood relations (who are poor) merits double rewards: those of charity and those of fostering the ties of kinship.”
Therefore, one should have no hesitation in helping out their family member with their zakah money especially if one doesn’t have other funds to provide for them.
Having said this, I must point out that if a person is sufficiently rich and has sufficient funds, he has an obligation not only to look after his own family but also to look after his close blood relations who are poor as well.
