Having doubts about releasing wind during prayer or ablution (Wudu) is a common affliction that can spiral into obsessive-compulsive behavior (Waswasah), causing unnecessary hardship. Many worshippers feel slight sensations and, fearing their purity is broken, repeat their washing multiple times or resort to rulings meant for those with medical incontinence.

Islamic scholars emphasize that the solution to this anxiety lies in the legal principle of certainty (Yaqin), rather than adopting special concessions prematurely.

The Principle of Certainty

The fundamental rule in Islamic jurisprudence is that “Certainty is not removed by doubt.” Once a person has performed Wudu, they remain in a state of ritual purity until they are certain that it has been broken.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed this exact issue. When asked about a person who imagines he has passed wind during prayer, he said:

“He should not leave [the prayer] unless he hears a sound or smells a scent.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Distinguishing Doubt from Reality

Based on this prophetic guidance, scholars advise that a worshipper should pay no attention to internal sensations or doubts.

  • The Criteria:Wudu is only invalidated if one hears the sound of wind, smells it, or feels the passage of gas without any doubt.
  • The Ruling: If there is no sound, no smell, and no absolute certainty, the Wudu is intact. The sensation is likely a natural movement of the intestines or a whisper from Satan intended to cause distress.

Dealing with Satanic Whispers (Waswasah)

In response to the inquiry about adopting the “one Wudu per prayer” concession (which applies to those with chronic incontinence), scholars note that one likely suffers from Waswasah (Satanic whispers) rather than a physical medical condition.

Therefore, the correct course of action is not to adopt the ruling of the sick (repeating Wudu for every prayer), but to ignore the doubts and proceed with worship assuming purity. Only if the passing of wind becomes a continuous, undeniable physical reality (where control is lost) should one consult a doctor and then seek a specific Fatwa for incontinence. Until then, the basic ruling is that the worshipper is pure.
