Developing child self-confidence and addressing behavioural challenges requires a balanced approach that combines positive reinforcement, emotional support, and parental patience. When a young person exhibits difficulty accepting accountability or displays hostility toward younger siblings despite academic success, targeted emotional and spiritual strategies can effectively guide character development.
Positive Reinforcement and Truthfulness
Building self-esteem begins by actively noticing and praising moments of honesty and courage. When a child demonstrates truthfulness during difficult situations, parents should acknowledge this conduct and highlight divine rewards. Establishing a structured reward system for consistent positive behaviour reinforces good habits, gradually transforming rare positive exceptions into standard conduct. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) highlighted the merit of truthfulness, stating that truthfulness leads to righteousness (Bukhari). Additionally, Allah assures believers of the reward for good deeds in the Quran:
“Indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of the doers of good.” (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:120)
Managing Sibling Jealousy
Harsh behaviour toward younger siblings often stems from underlying feelings of displacement or normal childhood jealousy. Allocating dedicated one-on-one time daily—even fifteen minutes during morning or bedtime routines—reassures the child of parental love and reduces rivalry. Ensuring each sibling receives focused personal attention fosters emotional security within the home environment.
Building Competence
Engaging in structured extracurricular pursuits helps children develop self-worth and social competence. Participation in group sports, artistic endeavours, or community youth organisations provides opportunities to achieve success among peers. Experiencing accomplishment outside the academic sphere strengthens self-assurance and mitigates negative attitudes.
Character Guidance
Modifying behavioural patterns requires continuous effort and steadfast patience from guardians. Character growth occurs incrementally over time rather than instantaneously. As Allah commands steadfastness in family guidance:
“And enjoin prayer upon your family and be steadfast therein.” (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:132)
